How to Set Up Google Business Profile for a Service Business

Google Business Profile is the single biggest local search lever you have, and most service businesses set it up wrong. Either they skip it, half-finish it, or they lean on whatever defaults Google suggests and end up invisible in their own town. Here is the 2026 walkthrough I would give a barbershop owner or a contractor sitting across from me right now.

Step one: Claim or create your profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If a profile already exists (Google sometimes auto-creates them from public data), you'll see it in the results and can claim it. If not, hit Add Your Business and start fresh. Verification is the moment most owners stall. Google will mail you a postcard with a code, or video-verify if your category supports it. Do whichever option appears first. Postcards take 5 to 14 days. Video verification is often instant. Either way, do not submit the rest of your profile until you complete this step.

Step two: Pick the right categories

Your primary category is the strongest signal Google uses to decide what searches you show up for. Pick the one that matches what you actually do, not what sounds prestigious. A barbershop is a Barber Shop, not a Hair Salon. An auto shop is an Auto Repair Shop, not Mechanic. Add up to nine secondary categories. Use them to capture adjacent services. A barbershop can add Hair Salon, Men's Hair Salon, and Beard Care Service. An auto shop can add Brake Shop, Oil Change Service, and Auto Tune-Up Service. Each secondary expands the range of searches you can rank for. Skip categories that don't apply just to fill the slots.

Step three: Service area or storefront

If customers come to you, set Storefront and put your real street address. If you go to customers (HVAC, plumbing, mobile repair), set Service Area and define the cities you serve. Don't do both. Hybrid setups confuse the algorithm. If you're a service area business, hide your address from public view in the settings. Google still uses it for verification, but customers see only the cities you serve, which is the right experience.

Step four: Description, hours, services

The description is 750 characters. Write it like a human would speak. Mention the services, the customer types, the local area. Don't keyword-stuff. Google is sophisticated enough to penalize obvious gaming. Hours need to be exact. Google uses these for the open/closed indicator on Maps, and customers do not forgive showing up to a closed shop. Add holiday hours in advance, especially around major holidays. Services is where most owners stop too early. Add every distinct service you offer as its own entry, with a short description. A barbershop should have separate entries for Haircut, Beard Trim, Hot Towel Shave, Kids Cut, and so on. Google indexes each one separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does verification take?

Postcard verification takes 5 to 14 business days. Video verification is often same-day. Skip the email verification option if it appears - it's slower and less reliable.

Should I list a phone number?

Yes, and it should match the phone number on your website and any other directory listings. NAP consistency is a trust signal for Google.

Can I list two locations under one profile?

No. Each location needs its own profile. Google groups them under your business name, but the profiles are separate.
